The formula

Chronological age is the completed time from a birth date to a reference date (usually today) on the Gregorian calendar. We subtract year, month, and day components, then “borrow” from the previous month or year when the day-of-month or month has not yet been reached — the same approach used in everyday date arithmetic.

Age = Reference Date − Birth Date (Y/M/D with calendar borrow)

Worked example

  1. Born 15 January 1990; reference date 1 July 2026
  2. Years: 2026 − 1990 = 36 (birthday already passed in the year)
  3. From 15 January to 1 July within the year: 5 months and 16 days

Result: 36 years, 5 months, 16 days

How age is calculated

There is more than one way to talk about age. This tool reports Western chronological age on the Gregorian calendar — the system used for most legal, medical, and administrative purposes in the United States, Europe, and many other countries.

Western chronological age

Age increases on your birthday. Someone who has lived 3 years and 11 months is still 3 years old until the next birthday. That completed-years count is what most forms mean by “age,” while this calculator also shows the remaining months and days for precision.

We also report total days and whole weeks between the birth date and today. Those totals help when you need a single continuous measure (for example, infant age in days or weeks) rather than a calendar Y/M/D breakdown.

Other cultural age systems

Some cultures count years differently. In traditional East Asian age reckoning (often called nominal age or, in Chinese contexts, suì), a newborn may be considered age 1 at birth, and age may increase at the lunar New Year rather than on the birthday. Two people born on consecutive calendar days can therefore share the same traditional age after New Year while remaining a day apart in Western age.

Korean and other regional customs have historically used related systems; many official documents now prefer international chronological age. This calculator does not convert to traditional East Asian age — it stays with birthday-based chronology so results match passports, school enrollment, and most medical charts.

End-of-month and uneven months

Months have different lengths, so “one month later” is ambiguous at month ends. Example: from 28 February 2022 to 31 March 2022, one reasonable reading is “one month and three days” (advance to 28 March, then add three days). Another reading treats both dates as month-ends and calls the span “exactly one month.”

We use the first method: when the day-of-month on the reference date is earlier than the birth day-of-month, we borrow the length of the previous calendar month and reduce the month count by one. The same borrow logic applies from years to months. That keeps results consistent with common programming and spreadsheet date differences.

Leap-day birthdays

People born on 29 February only have an exact anniversary in leap years. In non-leap years, observance and legal treatment vary by jurisdiction — often 28 February or 1 March for contracts, benefits, or “next birthday” rules. This tool still computes completed years/months/days from the recorded birth date; it does not invent a local leap-day observance rule.

What we do not model

Results use local calendar dates (no time-of-day). Time zones, daylight saving, and hour/minute/second age are omitted so a birth date entered as a date matches civil records. For intervals between two arbitrary dates — not “age today” — use the date difference calculator.

Interesting facts

Leap years follow a fixed rule

In the Gregorian calendar, most years divisible by 4 are leap years, except century years that are not divisible by 400 (1900 was not; 2000 was). Age math must respect February 29 when it falls between birth and reference dates.

Legal age is usually chronological

Voting, driving, alcohol purchase, and Social Security eligibility in the US generally use chronological age from the legal birth date. School cut-off dates still vary by state and district even when the age formula is the same.

Infants are often tracked in days or weeks

Pediatrics and neonatal care frequently use age in days or completed weeks because small differences matter early in life. Adult forms almost always ask for years alone.

Birth date beats “felt age”

Chronological age counts completed calendar time. Biological or “felt” age from health markers can differ, but official age for IDs and benefits follows the civil birth record.

Midnight and time zones

If birth occurred near midnight across a zone boundary, the legal birth date is the one on the jurisdiction’s record — not a traveler’s phone clock. Enter that recorded date here.
