The formula

Charging cost is energy delivered times the price per kilowatt-hour. Home and public rates are applied separately so you can compare.

Home cost = kWh × Home $/kWh · Public cost = kWh × Public $/kWh · Savings = Public − Home

Worked example

  1. 40 kWh, home $0.16/kWh, public $0.48/kWh
  2. Home = 40 × 0.16 = $6.40
  3. Public = 40 × 0.48 = $19.20 · home saves $12.80

Result: Home $6.40 · Public $19.20

How EV charging cost is calculated

We multiply the kilowatt-hours you enter by each rate. Idle fees, membership discounts, and tax display formats vary by network.

kWh delivered vs from the wall

Chargers and dashboards usually report energy into the battery. Home wall energy can be a few percent higher due to conversion losses — if your meter shows wall kWh, use that for true cost.

Home vs public rates

Overnight residential tariffs are often much cheaper than DC fast charging. Public AC can sit between the two. Enter the all-in price you actually pay (including VAT where billed that way).

What we do not model

No session idle fees, peak/off-peak schedules, solar self-consumption, or battery degradation. Occupancy fees after charging completes can dominate short top-ups.

Home is usually cheaper

In many markets, residential overnight rates are a fraction of highway DC prices — the gap is the main reason overnight home charging wins on cost.

kWh, not “full”

A 20–80% highway boost may be ~40 kWh on a 60–75 kWh pack. Cost tracks energy, not the charge percentage alone.

Idle fees

Some networks charge per minute after charging ends. Those fees are separate from the kWh rate this tool uses.

Efficiency losses

AC Level 2 typically loses a few percent as heat. DC fast charging also has thermal overhead in cold weather.
