The formula

Prayer times follow the sun at your coordinates. Solar noon sets Dhuhr; sunrise and Maghrib use the visible sun with refraction; Fajr and Isha use twilight angles that vary by Islamic authority; Asr uses a shadow-length rule (Shafi‘i or Hanafi).

Times = f(latitude, longitude, date, UTC offset, method angles, Asr shadow factor)

Worked example

  1. Location near Mecca: 21.4225°N, 39.8262°E, UTC+3
  2. Date 2026-09-30, Muslim World League angles, Shafi‘i Asr
  3. Solar noon ≈ 12:04; Maghrib follows sunset

Result: Full timetable: Fajr through Isha for that day

How prayer times are calculated

These times are astronomical estimates. Local mosques and national authorities may publish slightly different schedules after applying official adjustments.

Solar geometry

Declination and the equation of time locate the sun for the given civil date. Hour angles from your latitude produce clock times once a UTC offset is applied.

Calculation methods

Authorities disagree on twilight depth for Fajr and Isha. Muslim World League commonly uses 18°/17°; ISNA often uses 15°/15° in North America; Egypt, Karachi, Umm al-Qura (Makkah), and others publish their own angles or fixed Maghrib→Isha intervals.

Asr madhab

Shafi‘i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools typically begin Asr when an object’s shadow equals its length plus the noon shadow. The Hanafi school commonly waits until the shadow is twice that length.

High latitudes

Near the poles, twilight can fail to reach the configured angle in summer or winter. Above about 48° latitude this tool automatically uses an angle-based night fraction so Fajr and Isha still produce finite times — confirm with your local guidance.

What we do not claim

We do not reproduce every national calendar (for example proprietary Diyanet adjustments). Treat results as a planning aid and follow your mosque or official timetable when they differ.

Interesting facts

Five daily prayers

Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha mark the obligatory daily salah windows; sunrise is shown because it ends the Fajr window.

Twilight angles differ

Fajr and Isha depend on how far the sun is below the horizon — a few degrees’ difference can shift those times by many minutes.

Location matters more than city name

A large metro area can span enough longitude and elevation that mosque times differ by a minute or two from a city centroid.

UTC offset is part of the math

Clock times need your timezone (including daylight saving). Wrong offset shifts the whole schedule even if latitude and longitude are correct.

Ramadan interest peaks

Search for prayer and fasting schedules rises sharply in Ramadan; the same solar formulas apply year-round with the date you enter.

Frequently asked questions

Open this page and allow location when prompted — we fill coordinates and timezone from your device. Pick the calculation method your mosque uses if it differs from Muslim World League. To plan for another place, switch Location to Enter manually and type latitude, longitude, and UTC offset.

Match your local mosque or national authority when possible. ISNA is common in North America; Muslim World League is a frequent international default; Umm al-Qura is associated with Saudi Arabia; Egypt and University of Karachi serve other regional conventions.

Standard (Shafi‘i / Maliki / Hanbali) Asr begins earlier (shadow factor 1). Hanafi Asr begins later (shadow factor 2). Maghrib and the other prayers are unchanged by this setting.

Mosques may use different angles, minute safety margins, or municipal calendars. Small differences of 1–5 minutes are common; follow the timetable your congregation uses for jama‘ah.

Yes. After your location is set, tap Enable compass, hold the phone flat, and turn until the Qibla marker sits under the top pointer. The bearing is calculated toward the Kaaba in Makkah. Magnetometers can drift near metal or electronics — confirm with your mosque when precision matters.

When true twilight never reaches the method’s Fajr/Isha angle, the calculator automatically applies an angle-based night fraction above about 48° latitude so Fajr and Isha still receive estimated times.

Sunrise is not one of the five obligatory prayers, but it marks the end of the Fajr window and is useful for planning.
