How test timing is estimated

Home tests detect hCG in urine after implantation. Levels rise after a fertilized egg implants — usually several days after ovulation — so calendar timing is only a guide.

Why “missed period” is the usual earliest day

Sensitive tests can turn positive around the day of the expected period for some pregnancies, which under calendar assumptions is LMP + cycle length (about 14 days past ovulation).

If ovulation was later than estimated, hCG may still be undetectable on that calendar day — a common false-negative scenario.

More reliable a week later

Waiting about seven days after the missed period gives hCG more time to rise. If the first test is negative but the period still has not started, retest or see a clinician.

Early-result and digital tests

Some kits advertise testing several days before the missed period. Sensitivity varies by brand and urine concentration (first-morning urine is often recommended). This calculator does not model brand-specific thresholds.

When to get clinical care

A positive home test should be followed up with a clinician for confirmation and prenatal planning. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, or dizziness needs urgent care regardless of test result.

hCG doubles roughly every 2–3 days early on

In early pregnancy, rising hCG is why a test that was negative yesterday can turn positive a few days later.

False negatives are more common than false positives

Testing too early, dilute urine, and expired kits explain most home false negatives. True false positives are less common but possible (including some medications or recent pregnancy loss).

Implantation often ~6–12 days after ovulation

Bleeding or spotting around that window is sometimes called implantation spotting — it is not a reliable pregnancy signal on its own.

Blood tests can detect earlier

Quantitative serum hCG ordered by a clinician can detect lower levels than many urine strips — useful when timing is unclear.

Cycle length changes the calendar

A 35-day cycle places the expected period later than a 28-day cycle — testing “two weeks after sex” without knowing ovulation day is less precise than LMP-based timing.

For most home urine tests, the day of your expected period (LMP + average cycle length) is a practical earliest day. Waiting about a week after a missed period improves reliability.
