The formula

Tax = bill × tax%. Tip defaults to pre-tax bill × tip% (or post-tax if you choose). Grand total = bill + tax + tip. Per person = total ÷ people.

Tax = Bill×tax% · Tip = Base×tip% · Total = Bill+Tax+Tip · Share = Total÷n

Worked example

  1. Bill $100, tax 8%, tip 18%, 4 people (tip on pre-tax)
  2. Tax = $8 · Tip = $18 · Total = $126
  3. Per person = $126 ÷ 4 = $31.50

Result: $31.50 each · total $126.00

How the split is calculated

This extends a simple tip calculator with sales tax and an explicit party size — ideal when the receipt shows tax separately.

Tip base

Many diners tip on the pre-tax subtotal; others tip on the post-tax total. Use the Tip base control to match your habit. Pre-tax is the default.

Even splits

Per-person shares divide the grand total evenly. Uneven orders need itemized allocation outside this tool.

What we do not model

No automatic service-charge detection, delivery fees, or currency conversion. Pair with the tip calculator for tip-only math.

Interesting facts

Tax then tip

Sales tax is usually on the food subtotal. Tip customs differ on whether tax is included in the tip base.

Service included

If a service charge is already on the bill, confirm whether an extra tip is expected before adding tip %.

Rounding

Card apps often round to the cent; cash splits may leave a few cents of remainder.

Large parties

Some US restaurants auto-add gratuity for 6+ guests — check the receipt before stacking another tip.

Sibling tip tool

Frequently asked questions

Enter bill, tip %, tax %, and number of people. The result shows each person’s share of the grand total.

Optional. Choose Tip base: pre-tax (default) or post-tax for a more generous tip.

Calculate tip/tax on the full bill, then allocate each person’s items plus their share of tip and tax manually.

Related — tip calculator omits tax %. This tool adds tax and a fuller breakdown.

This calculator assumes an even split of the grand total. For uneven orders, total the tax and tip separately, then add each person’s item cost plus their proportional share of tax and tip.

Check the receipt first. If an automatic service charge is already included, set tip % to 0 or a smaller top-up amount so you do not double-tip.

Results round to the nearest cent, same as a card receipt. Cash splits may leave a few cents of remainder to settle between the group.
