The formula

Project area is rectangle (L×W) or circle (π(d/2)²). With plank packing, plank area = length × width, order planks = ceil((area ÷ plank area) × (1 + waste%)), and boxes = ceil(order ÷ planks per box). With carton coverage, order area = area × (1 + waste%) and boxes = ceil(order area ÷ coverage per box).

Worked example

  1. Room 5 m × 4 m → area = 20 m²
  2. Plank mode: 120 cm × 20 cm plank → 0.24 m²; with 10% waste → 92 planks; 8 per box → 12 boxes
  3. Coverage mode: same room with 2.05 m² per box and 10% waste → ceil(22.00 ÷ 2.05) = 11 boxes

Result: 92 planks (12 boxes) · or 11 boxes by coverage

How flooring quantity is calculated

The calculator estimates order quantity from geometric room area and a waste allowance, then packs that demand either by plank size or by the coverage printed on each carton.

Choose plank count or carton coverage

Use plank mode when you know face length, width, and planks per box. Use coverage mode when the carton only lists m² or ft² coverage — common on laminate and LVP labels.

Waste covers cuts, not just defects

Straight layouts in rectangular rooms often need about 5–10% extra. Diagonal, herringbone, L-shapes, and many doorways push waste higher because end cuts rarely reuse cleanly.

What this tool does not model

It does not subtract closets or islands automatically, estimate underlayment rolls, expansion gaps as separate material, or dye-lot matching rules. Measure irregular rooms as combined rectangles and subtract large openings when you want a tighter takeoff.

Interesting facts

Industry waste guidance starts around 5%

Wood flooring associations often cite about 5% as a minimum for defect culling on simple straight installs. Field practice usually adds more for wall end-cuts, so many DIY estimates use 8–10% for straight rooms.

Diagonal layouts waste more material

A 45° layout creates angled offcuts at every wall. Planning 12–15% waste (or more for herringbone) reduces the chance of a mid-job shortage.

Same dye lot matters for repairs

Keeping one spare box from the same production lot helps with future repairs when shade and embossing patterns change between batches.

Wide planks can raise offcut loss

Wider boards leave larger unusable remnants at walls and around obstacles, so waste percentages that work for narrow laminate may be too low for wide planks.

Acclimation is separate from quantity

Most wood and many laminate products need time to adjust to room temperature and humidity before install. That step does not change plank count, but it does affect when you should open boxes.

Box labels list coverage and piece count

Cartons usually show both approximate m² (or ft²) coverage and how many planks are inside. Coverage mode uses the printed area; plank mode cross-checks piece count against plank face size.

Yes. The geometry is the same for plank products. Adjust waste for pattern and grade, and prefer coverage mode when the manufacturer quotes cartons by area.

You cannot buy a fraction of a plank or a partial sealed box in most stores. Rounding up after waste avoids shortfalls during the last rows.

Perimeter expansion gaps are usually a few millimetres and are covered inside normal cutting waste. They are not modeled as a separate area deduction.
