Estimate children’s clothing size from height. European labels often match height in centimetres; US/UK age bands are rough backups.

The formula
We snap height to the nearest common EU height size (50–170 cm steps). Approximate US/UK age bands are derived from the same height.
How to measure children for clothes
Measure without shoes; stand straight against a wall.
- Height — Mark the top of the head; measure to the floor in cm.
- Chest — Optional underarm chest for tops.
- Compare — Match height to EU size; age is backup.
- Prefer height over age on the label.
- Between sizes, size up for coats.
Worked example
- Child height 110 cm
- Nearest EU height size → 110
- Approx age band ~3–5 y · US ~4–5
Result: EU 110 · US ~4–5
How kids’ sizes are estimated
Children’s ready-to-wear is graded primarily by height in much of Europe. Age on the tag is a marketing convenience that varies by brand and country.
EU height labels
Common EU sizes step every 6 cm (68, 74, 80…164). We pick the closest label with a small tolerance so a child near a boundary lands on a wearable size.
US/UK age bands
US often prints age ranges or toddler “T” sizes. We map height to coarse bands (for example 4–5, 6–7). These are approximate — brand charts win.
Growth and outerwear
Between sizes, size up for coats and sweaters so layers and growth spurts still fit. Recheck height every few months during growth spurts.
What we do not model
No weight, chest, or shoe size. Shoes need a separate foot-length measurement — use the shoe converter.
Interesting facts
EU height sizes
An EU 110 label usually fits children about 105–115 cm tall — height beats age on the tag.
Age labels vary
“Age 5” differs widely by brand and country; use it only as a rough backup.
US often uses age or letter
US kids’ wear frequently lists age ranges or XS–XL rather than EU height codes.
Size up for outerwear
Between sizes, size up for coats and sweaters so layers and growth spurts still fit.
Measure height often
Children grow in spurts — recheck height every few months before buying for a season.
Frequently asked questions
Height is more reliable, especially for EU labels where the number is centimetres. Use age only as a backup.
It usually targets children around 110 cm tall (roughly 105–115 cm depending on brand).
Measure feet separately with the shoe size converter — clothing height does not set shoe size.
Yes — choose inches as the unit; we convert to centimetres before selecting the EU size.
For coats and knits, size up. For close-fitting pieces, compare the brand’s centimetre chart and return policy.
