La formula

Net ≈ Gross − income tax − employee payroll/social charges. Income tax uses the same simplified progressive brackets as our income tax calculator. Payroll is an optional teaching estimate (e.g. U.S. FICA-style employee share).

Net = Gross − Tax(Gross) − Payroll(Gross)

Esempio svolto

  1. Gross $60,000, single (simplified US-style brackets)
  2. Estimate federal income tax from brackets; add ~7.65% FICA-style payroll on wages
  3. Net annual ÷ 12 ≈ monthly take-home

Risultato: Net annual and monthly shown in the result panel

How take-home is estimated

Paystubs combine income tax withholding with social/payroll contributions. This page stacks simplified versions of both.

Income tax layer

We reuse the same progressive bracket engine as the income tax calculator (country pages switch tables). Deductions, credits, and state/local tax are omitted unless a country page says otherwise.

Payroll / social layer

When enabled, we add a simplified employee payroll or social contribution estimate (for example U.S. Social Security + Medicare employee shares, or rough EU-style employee social percentages). Employer contributions are not deducted from your net.

What we do not model

Health premiums, 401(k)/pension deferrals, garnishments, local taxes, and year-specific credits. Treat output as a planning ballpark — not a payroll system.

Fatti interessanti

Gross vs net

Gross is before deductions. Net (take-home) is what hits your bank account after tax and payroll withholdings.

Effective rate

Total deductions ÷ gross. Usually far below your top marginal income-tax bracket.

Withholding ≠ final tax

Paycheck withholding is an estimate. Filing reconciles prepaid tax versus actual liability.

Benefits change net

Pre-tax benefits (health, retirement) lower taxable wages — not modeled in the simple estimate.

Pair with hourly converter

Convert an hourly offer to annual gross first, then estimate take-home here.

Domande frequenti

We subtract estimated income tax and optional payroll/social charges from gross annual pay, then show monthly and biweekly nets.

It uses the same tax brackets, then continues to net pay by subtracting payroll/social estimates and showing paycheck-sized figures.

On the default U.S.-style model with payroll enabled, yes — as a simplified employee FICA estimate. Turn payroll off to see income tax only.

Country-scoped pages switch bracket and social approximations. Always read the methodology — real systems are more detailed.
